Ices and Vices

Today, I fell on a patch of ice on my way to my car.

I went all the way down. It was jarring. I lost my granola bar in the process.

I stepped off the crib, carefully navigating the big chunks of snow and ice, or so I thought. It was the thin and smooth ice that looked like bare concrete that brought me down. At first, I couldn’t even see the ice when I got up to look at the ground.

It reminded me that sometimes, we pay so much attention to the big vices that can derail us that we often overlook the small temptations that can send us to the ground.

Be mindful of the little things if you want to stay upright this new year.

Construction

My wife and I have been remodeling our basement. It’s been a lot of fun! Don’t get me wrong, we have had challenges and we have both wanted to pull out our hair. The process of creating has been a blast.

Our parents have helped us throughout our project. It’s been fun to work with them. Both of our families are creators and working with them to create something in our basement fills me with joy.

Creating is construction. You take materials and construct something out of them. I think to construct is to work closely with God. He is the creator of the material we use to construct. It’s a holy moment when you realize you are making something with your hands that God made with His hands.

Here’s to creating and to having more moments to participate in God’s creating work.
